21st Century Terrorism: Global Terrorism – Global War – Global Chaos

September, 2010

21st Century terrorism seems to be something mobile. Terrorists are able to do something every time and in everywhere. But anti-terrorist forces, determines targets for hitting the terrorism and they call these places as the nests of terrorists. Location of these nests, in other words, countries which included terrorist nests are shown as terrorist countries in some perspectives then this country becomes an open target for anti-terrorist action. Is this the truth? No, it cannot be that much simple.

If you seek power, first, you have to have a base or let us call it a home. If you cannot have somewhere to hide, to rest and to exercise, then you will become an obvious target of your enemies. However, you have to find somewhere that you could be untouchable and comfortable. That is what terrorists do while selecting their nests. Failed states and their governments are not the only one to blame for the situation that they become the nests. They are the reflections of the capitalist world. Development of high technology, cultural divisions derived from new capitalist world and easiness of provocation and propaganda are not the inventions of these failed states. All these are the main instruments of terrorism, but they are invented by the developed world, which seems to suffer from terrorism most.

Western world invented and exported their ideologies and technology to the rest of the world. People of the west know how to protect themselves from their harms. They have power and knowledge to protect themselves, but, the third world cannot protect itself like west. Therefore, they cannot control the effects of capitalism and globalization. At this point, democracy and security trade comes into the account. Terrorism spreads like a disease and especially US had shown itself as the cure.

By now, failed states started to use terrorism for their protection. They use the terrorism card to threaten their enemies so those states shown as the supporters of terrorism. But they are not the ones who started this conflict and they are only trying to survive. Iran took this a step further with its nuclear program, US sees Iran's nuclear program as a terrorist activity too but Iran does not want to have the same fate with Iraq as understood. A new war is on the way but it will be different from the 1st World War, 2nd World War and the Cold War.

There were two stable forces during the Cold War. They were in a struggle that is either indirect or without force. With the fall of the Soviet Union, one of these stable forces collapsed. When the Cold War was over, the balances between them collapsed, also. Realists thought that a new force would be emerged against the US. However, it did not come to be so. While the US saw itself as the absolute power in the world, it started global high jacking. In this period, American foreign policy was to spread American hegemony, thus, spread capitalism and globalization. The US that looked down on Russia in this period, saw China as its biggest rival. Yet, the real expected enemy came out on 9/11/2001.
The US started to fight against a new and mobilized enemy. Obviously, the US wanted this enemy itself. Without creating chaos, US could not become the gendarme. Although the US foreign policy in this period seems to fight only against the terrorism, it found itself new colonials. The situation of Afghanistan and Iraq today is the clearest explanation to this. Right now America does not see itself as a gendarme but fighter for freedom. In the places it exports democracy; fascists and racists came into the power by elections. The US calls this as democracy promotion.
Obama seems to make some changes in the situation, but, The US's intergovernmental policies have continued to go on sometimes softly and sometimes violently. The pressure that the US puts upon Iran, shows that America do not give up on being the global gendarme. The war against terrorism that started with 9/11, and the efforts for uniting the civilized world against terrorism will continue with its open and secret actions and aims. US and so called civilized world will fight against the terrorist world for the world domination, nobody will win except chaos.
